Privacy Policy — Guitamania
Last updated: 10 Oct 2026 · Applies from Guitamania 1.5.1 (iOS, Android)
Guitamania has no accounts, no sign-in, and collects no personal information. Starting with version 1.1.2, the app counts a set of anonymous usage actions and receives crash reports — the “Usage data and crash reports” section below lists exactly what is sent, nothing more. Every feature still works offline, except images, videos and recordings in Guitar techniques that the device has never downloaded.
Microphone
The app requests microphone access for one purpose: to hear your guitar for tuning and pitch detection. Audio is processed on your device, in real time. It is never recorded, never stored, never transmitted. Leaving the Tuner screen turns the microphone off.
You may decline microphone access — everything else in the app still works.
Data stored on your device
Your settings (light/dark theme, language, left-handed mode), your saved items and an app-launch counter are written to the app’s private storage on your own device. Images, videos and recordings from Guitar techniques that you have downloaded are kept there for up to 30 days, so they play again offline. We cannot read any of it. Deleting the app deletes all of it.
Usage data and crash reports
To learn which features get used and whether the app runs reliably, the app sends two kinds of data to Google Firebase (Analytics and Crashlytics):
- Usage events: which library you open (Chords, Triads, Arpeggios, Scales, Guitar techniques), which diagram you view or play, which technique page you open, which video or recording you play and whether it played, saving an item, which Tuner mode you start, and the Metronome’s tempo and run time. These are action names and in-app choices only — no audio, nothing you type.
- Crash reports: when the app crashes, your device sends a technical trace of the failure (where in the code it happened, device model, OS version) so we can fix it.
Both come with a random identifier Firebase generates per app install (not your identity), the device model, app and OS version, and a coarse location (city/country level) derived from the IP address. No name, no email, no contacts, no precise location, no advertising ID — the Android build removes the advertising-ID permission entirely.
None of this is used for ads, sold to anyone, or used to track you across other apps or websites. Firebase processes the data under Google’s terms; data tied to an install is kept for at most 14 months, then deleted automatically. Deleting the app stops the sending.
What the app does not do, from 1.1.2
- No accounts, no collection of personal information (name, email, contacts, location).
- No ads, no tracking across apps or websites, no selling of data.
- No audio recording — Tuner audio stays on the device, as described under Microphone.
- No in-app purchases.
- No network connection required, except to download Guitar techniques media (below); the data above is only sent when one exists.
Four remaining outward-facing exceptions:
- On each real launch of a store build, the app asks Apple (iTunes Lookup) or Google Play whether a newer version exists, and reads that version’s release notes from the project’s Supabase. Both servers see the IP address like any web request — nothing identifying you is sent, and nothing is written. A network error or timeout is silent, with no retry.
- When you open the app and when you return to it, the app asks
media.guitamania.com(the project’s storage on Cloudflare R2) whether new content exists, such as the explanations in the libraries; if so, it downloads it and uses it from the next screen you open. The server sees the IP address and the name of the file, like any web request — nothing identifying you is sent. A network error or timeout is silent: the app keeps the content it has and asks again only the next time you open or return to the app. - In Guitar techniques, the app downloads images as you scroll to them, and
videos and recordings only when you tap them, from
media.guitamania.com(the project’s storage on Cloudflare R2). The server sees the IP address and the name of the file, like any web request — nothing identifying you is sent. A file that fails to download says so in place and downloads again only when you tap Try again. - Tapping Rate Guitamania opens Apple’s or Google’s own review interface. That is handled by the operating system under Apple’s/Google’s policies; the app receives nothing back.

Changes
This page describes the version named at the top, not a permanent promise. When a later version collects more — multi-device sync, accounts, in-app purchases — this page is updated on that release date, before the version reaches the store, and the list above is corrected to match.
