John Mayer released “Tom and Jerry,” his first solo single since the 2021 album Sob Rock, on October 23, 2026. The release also launches his Sob Rock Records label through a partnership with Mercury Records.

Sob Rock Records begins with a single

Mayer wrote and produced “Tom and Jerry” with Grammy winner Blake Slatkin, who shares both credits on the track. The song was recorded at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles and mixed by engineer Serban Ghenea. Before its full release on October 23, it debuted October 22 on Life With John Mayer, Mayer’s SiriusXM channel. Its title dates back to the start of the writing process. Mayer said “Tom and Jerry” was the name of the first voice memo he recorded when the song idea came to him. He also said his partnership with Mercury Records has made the path from creative vision to execution easier and more rewarding. Mercury chairman and CEO Tyler Arnold said the company would work with Sob Rock Records to support Mayer’s creative vision. The single begins the label’s catalog with Mayer’s own music while ending the gap between his solo releases that followed Sob Rock.

A Sphere residency in 2027

Mayer has also announced a 2027 residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Separately, he recently partnered with PRS and Land Rover Defender on new colors for his signature Silver Sky guitar. The collaboration brings colors inspired by Defender vehicles to the PRS model. Both projects were announced before “Tom and Jerry” arrived and remain Mayer’s other confirmed plans alongside the new label.
