Steve Vai Open to Returning for Planned Crossroads Sequel

News

The screenwriter John Fusco and Ralph Macchio have discussed a potential Crossroads sequel and have a plan for it, as revealed on November 3, 2026. Macchio played guitarist Eugene “Lightning Boy” Martone in the original 1980s film, and the proposed follow up would revisit that story years later.

A new focus years later

The sequel conversations began with Macchio suggesting some kind of anniversary project connected to Crossroads. He and Fusco have remained in contact since working on the original film, and that continuing exchange led to their current plan. Fusco has confirmed the discussions without revealing what the proposed story would cover or when the project could enter production.

Fusco expects the idea to appeal to music fans and blues purists. He has not explained how the project would approach either audience, so the concept remains undisclosed beyond the pair's confirmation that a plan exists. No production schedule has been shared, and the sequel has no stated date for production to begin.

Macchio has described the broad direction more clearly. He said the sequel would take place years after the original and would focus less on Eugene Martone. The central attention would instead move to someone relevant today, although Macchio did not identify that person or provide further story details. He has said he has not given up on the project and remains interested in seeing it made.

Steve Vai is willing to return as Jack Butler, the metal blues guitarist he played in the previous film. Vai joked that Butler needs revenge and connected that prospect to Macchio wanting to beat him again.
